Carbon sequestration in agricultural soils: Strategies for climate change mitigation-A Review

Abstract

Agricultural soils play a central role in climate change mitigation by sequestering carbon. Carbon sequestration captures atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) and stores it in soil organic matter. This paper discusses the potential of agricultural practices to improve soil carbon storage, their implications on climate change mitigation, and some of the challenges associated with implementing them. Strategies include conservation tillage, agroforestry, bio-char application, cover cropping, and improved nutrient management. The paper concludes with a call for integrated approaches, policy support, and research to optimize these practices for global sustainability.
