Exploring the medicinal potential of Psidium guajava leaves: A systematic review
Abstract
In Asia and North America, guava (Psidium guajava L., Myrtaceae) leaves have long been used as a traditional herbal tea for the treatment of diabetes. Using guava leaves (GLP), we extracted polysaccharides for this study and assessed the antioxidant activity and anti-diabetic effects of GLP on diabetes mice induced with a high-fat diet and streptozotocin. The findings showed that GLP demonstrated strong capacity to scavenge free radicals such as DPPH, OH, and ABTS additionally, it drastically reduced fasting blood sugar, malonaldehyde, creatinine, glycated serum protein, total cholesterol, and total triglycerides. In the meantime, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and overall antioxidant activity both increased noticeably. Enzyme activity in mice with diabetes, as well as lessened pancreatic, liver, and kidney damage.
