A study on problems and suggestions for effective implementation of e-NAM in Nizamabad district of Telangana

Abstract

The study examines the challenges and suggestions for the effective implementation of the National Agriculture Market (e-NAM), a digital initiative aimed at transforming agricultural marketing in India by integrating wholesale markets into a unified online platform. Conducted in Telangana, specifically the Nizamabad Agricultural Market, the research adopted an ex-post facto design and included 120 respondents comprising farmers, traders, commission agents, and market officials. Key findings highlight significant issues faced by stakeholders: farmers reported a lack of transparency, high commission charges, inadequate training, and insufficient infrastructure, while market officials cited insufficient assaying meters, digital illiteracy, and staffing shortages. Commission agents faced challenges such as wet produce and labor shortages, and traders encountered issues like limited bidding time, inconsistent quality standards, and inadequate IT infrastructure. The study further provides actionable suggestions to address these issues, including improving infrastructure, upgrading assaying systems, extending bidding time, and enhancing digital literacy through training programs. Strengthening collaboration among stakeholders and ensuring policy-level interventions are critical for the successful adoption of e-NAM, which has the potential to enhance price discovery, reduce transaction costs and empower farmers by creating a transparent and efficient agricultural marketing system. The study provides valuable insights into addressing the challenges of e-NAM implementation, contributing to its broader goal of transforming India’s agricultural marketing and improving farmers' livelihoods.
