Analyzing production constraints and proposing solutions for enhancing the efficiency of jaggery processing units: A study in Baghpat district, Uttar Pradesh

Abstract

Jaggery production is a critical agro-based industry in India, providing livelihood opportunities and preserving traditional sweetener-making practices, especially in sugarcane-dominant regions like Western Uttar Pradesh. This study examines the production constraints faced by jaggery processing units in the Baghpat district, a major sugarcane-producing area. Using a descriptive research design, data were collected from 30 jaggery processing units categorized into small, medium, and large, through structured interviews comprising 17 statements with yes/no responses. The analysis reveals that the most pressing challenges include price fluctuations in the jaggery market (Mean Score = 1.00), cane crusher closures due to rain (Mean Score = 0.97), and storage shortages (Mean Score = 0.90). Conversely, issues such as transportation problems and delayed payments for sold jaggery were less significant. The study underscores the need for targeted interventions, such as financial support for jaggery producers, better storage and transport facilities, market stabilization measures, and training programs for improving production efficiency. These solutions are essential for enhancing the sustainability and profitability of jaggery processing units in Western Uttar Pradesh. The findings provide a foundation for policymakers, stakeholders, and agribusiness professionals to address these constraints, ensuring the growth of this traditional industry and its continued contribution to rural development.
