The role of chromium in gestational diabetes Mellitus: Mechanisms and impacts

Abstract

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is a complex condition characterized by glucose intolerance and insulin resistance that develops during pregnancy. Chromium, an essential trace mineral, plays a critical role in modulating insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism. This review examines the potential of chromium supplementation as a therapeutic intervention in GDM. By analyzing its biochemical mechanisms, the study highlights chromium's ability to enhance insulin receptor function, reduce oxidative stress, and mitigate inflammation-key factors implicated in GDM pathophysiology. Additionally, the review discusses the safe dosage, possible side effects, and clinical outcomes of chromium supplementation. The findings suggest that chromium holds promise as an adjunct therapy for managing GDM, although further research is needed to establish standardized protocols and long-term safety.
