Study that determines the better postoperative rehabilitation method for improving functional outcomes in children with CDK associated with AMC

Abstract

Background: Congenital dislocated knee is one of the major complications for children with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita that needs surgical intervention with the aim of knee stabilization. A special postoperative rehabilitation is necessary to optimize the recovery and functional result. Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to test the efficiency of some particular postoperative rehabilitation methods to improve knee function and mobility in children aged 8 months up to 1.5 years diagnosed with congenital dislocated knee due to AMC. Methods: The population sample was 30 children who underwent postoperative rehabilitation at NITOR from February 2023 to February 2024. The inclusion criteria involved surgeries such as quadriceps lengthening, and posterior joint capsule reconstruction for knee stabilization. Follow-up assessments were conducted at 2 weeks, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th weeks, and monthly thereafter. Results: Statistical analysis indicated a significant improvement in knee function and mobility with time, reflecting the efficacy of the rehabilitation techniques used. Conclusion: Early intervention and individualized rehabilitation protocols go a long way toward bringing improvements in postoperative outcomes for children diagnosed with AMC-related CDK. The results have provided important insights into managing such a complex condition.
