Role of polyhalite in soil-plant nutrition studies

Abstract

Polyhalite, naturally occurring mineral comprising Potassium (K), Magnesium (Mg), Calcium (Ca), and Sulfur (S), has emerged as a promising multi-nutrient fertilizer in agricultural research. Its unique composition makes it an ideal supplement for soils deficient in essential nutrients, particularly K, Mg, and S. Recent studies indicate that polyhalite not only improves soil nutrient content but also enhances plant growth, yield, and overall health. In addition to providing essential macro-nutrients, polyhalite is known for its low chloride content, making it suitable for crops sensitive to high salinity levels. Research also suggests that polyhalite’s slow-release properties ensure a steady supply of nutrients over time, reducing the frequency of fertilizer applications and minimizing environmental runoff. This review critically examines the role of polyhalite in soil-plant nutrition, synthesizing findings from various global studies to highlight its impact on soil health, nutrient cycling, plant uptake, and yield improvement. Moreover, it delves into the interaction of polyhalite with other fertilizers and its potential role in addressing challenges posed by modern agricultural practices, such as nutrient leaching and soil degradation. Through a comprehensive analysis of laboratory and field experiments, this paper aims to elucidate the mechanisms by which polyhalite enhances soil-plant systems and its broader implications for sustainable agriculture.
