Studies on tomato grafting and their effect on performance with different rootstocks
Abstract
The present review entitled “studies on tomato grafting and their effect on performance with different rootstocks” revealed that the compatibility and benefits of grafting different tomato varieties (Solanum lycopersicum) onto wild brinjal (Solanum torvum) rootstock and found significant improvements in various growth and yield parameters for grafted tomatoes compared to non-grafted controls. The grafting of tomato on wild brinjal Solanum torvum rootstock was highly compatible. Water logging is a serious problem for the survival of plants, particularly during the early establishment stage. One study on 20 tomato genotypes tomato genotype grafted onto eggplant rootstock (IC-111056) under waterlogged conditions concluded that all 20 combinations showed significant variation in different parameters under water logging stress. There were no leaf chlorosis and wilting in the plant, and was less reduction in chlorophyll content (CCI), chlorophyll fluorescence yield (Fv/ Fm) in all plant growth stages, when tomato hybrids were grafted over eggplant rootstocks. Effects of grafting on tomato growth and fruit quality under saline conditions concluded that tomato could be grown successfully with a satisfactory yield by grafting onto suitable rootstock under salt stress (EC 3.76 dS). Another finding was under saline conditions, grafted plants accumulated more Ca and K in the leaves and had lower Na and Cl levels. The grafting significantly increased plant resistance to bacterial wilt, with survival rates exceeding 90% in most cases. Yield improvements were notable, with grafted plants showing a 38.65% increase in yield per plant compared to non-grafted controls. Impact of grafting tomato onto potato rootstocks on quality traits i.e. TSS, starch content, pericarp thickness, and ascorbic acid are influencing by potato rootstocks.
