Studies on soil constraints in intensive tomato growing soils of Harapanahalli taluk, Vijayanagara district
Abstract
A case study was conducted to assess the soil nutrient constraints in the intense tomato-growing soils of Harapanahalli taluk, Vijayanagara District, Karnataka. A total of 60 soil samples were collected, of which 30 surface and subsurface samples at depth of 0-15 cm and 15-30 cm covered seven villages. The result revealed that a neutral to alkaline pH range, with surface soil pH ranging from 7.20 to 8.34 (mean 7.75) and subsurface from 7.31 to 8.58 (mean 7.88). Electrical conductivity (EC) remained within normal limits across both surface (surface EC ranging from 0.17 to 0.45 dS m-1 and subsurface from 0.19 to 0.52 dS m-1). Organic carbon content was higher in surface soils, decreasing with depth, ranging from 3.40 to 6.89 g kg-1. Available nitrogen and phosphorus levels varied significantly, with Kulahalli village showing the highest values. Potassium (K2O) levels were sufficient across samples, with calcium and magnesium also showing adequate levels, generally higher in surface soils. The findings indicates the favorable soil quality for agriculture, with acceptable nutrient levels and minimal salinity, though variability in nutrient levels indicates potential benefits from targeted soil management.
