Tradition meets progress: The bugis tribe's views on women's empowerment in sports

Abstract

This research aims to reveal the views of the Bugis tribe towards the active involvement of women in sports, which has long been considered taboo in traditional society. Using a qualitative descriptive method through a questionnaire survey, this research involved the Bugis community in South Sulawesi, aged between 20 and 70 years. The results showed that 32.4% of the public had a positive view of women's participation in sports, 29.6% had a neutral view, while 26.8% gave a negative response, and 4.2% had a very negative view. These findings indicate that although some communities are still tied to traditional values that limit the role of women, the majority are starting to accept and support women's involvement in sports. Factors such as education, modernization and increasing awareness about gender equality are contributing to this change in perception.
