Unveiling socioeconomic dynamics and challenges among sugarcane cultivators in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh in India: A case study

Abstract

The success of sugarcane farming hinges on the intricate interplay of various socio-economic factors influencing the adoption of advanced technological practices. This research, conducted in Sitapur district during 2022-2023, delves into the socio-economic conditions of sugarcane farmers, shedding light on both the advantages and challenges within the sector. Focusing on the Machhrehta and Gondlamau blocks, a total of 10 villages were randomly selected for an in-depth examination. Respondents, totaling 120, were chosen from these villages, offering a comprehensive snapshot of the demographic landscape. The majority of respondents, falling within the middle-aged (22-36 years), predominantly belonged to Other Backward Castes (OBC). Most were literate, maintaining nuclear families with 5-9 members. Agriculture emerged as the primary occupation, categorizing respondents as smallholder farmers. The average annual income is around 2 lakh rupees. The study revealed significant hurdles faced by most respondents in adopting sugarcane production technologies. These included the high costs of fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides, a lack of marketing infrastructure, delayed payments from sugarcane factories, inadequate training facilities for best practices, limited availability and high costs of sugarcane setts, insufficient irrigation facilities, a shortage of skilled labor, irregular electricity supply, and the timely availability of affordable sugarcane seeds. And suggest a suitable strategy for increasing sugarcane production in the study area. It provided valuable insights into the socio-economic landscape of sugarcane farmers, demonstrating links with the adoption of improved production methods. Positive factors contributing to increased sugarcane yields were identified, alongside challenges in implementing optimal farming practices. These findings have significant implications for future planning at both state and national levels, offering strategic guidance to overcome obstacles and enhance sugarcane production nationwide.
