Enhancing Brinjal's resistance to Alternaria leaf spot by application of phytoextracts

Abstract

Brinjal (Solanum melongena L.) herbaceous annual vegetable crop has an upright or semi-spreading habit. The plant is compact, upright, and has many branches. Its root system is somewhat lignified or fibrous. Large, straightforward, lobed leaves alternate on the stems. The fruit is a kind of fleshy berry. Fruit can be ovoid, oblong, obovoid, or long cylindrical in shape. Fruit colors can also vary, including shining purple, white, green, yellowish, or striped. This significant vegetable crop has been discovered to be moderately to severely infected with Alternaria leaf spot disease in the Prayagraj district of Uttar Pradesh. Brinjal is a fruit that is commonly used in Indian diets due to its exceptional nutritional and therapeutic qualities. Effect of various treatment (Phytoextracts) were evaluated on growth parameter and B:C ratio under field condition. Among the treatments, maximum plant height (cm) at 30, 60 and 90 DAT was recorded in T3 - Datura stramonium @ 10% F.S (21.42 cm), (34.45 cm) and (44.04 cm) followed by T6 - Allium sativum @ 10% F.S (20.48cm), (33.25 cm) and (42.88cm) compared to T0 – control (14.91 cm), (29.44 cm) and (46.24 cm). The maximum number of leaves at 30, 60 and 90 DAT was recorded in T3 - Datura stramonium @ 10% F.S (10.56), (30.55) and (46.46) followed by T6 - Allium sativum @ 10% F.S (9.93), (29.52) and (45.56) compared to T0 - control (7.50), (24.38) and (38.43). The maximum number of branches were recorded in T3 - Datura stramonium @ 10% F.S (4.66), (10.96) and (14.93) followed by T6 - Allium sativum @ 10% F.S (4.13), (10.23) and (14.30) compared to T0 - control (2.26), (6.46) and (9.26) The highest B:C ratio was recorded in T3- Datura stramonium @ 10% F.S (2.59) followed by T5- Allium cepa @ 10% F.S. (2.34) as compared to T0- control (1.43) respectively.
