Studies on germination and graft compatability of wild solanumspp with solanaceous crops
Abstract
The current experiment was carried out in Centre of Excellence, Jeedimetla, Hyderabad, to study the germination and graft compatibilityof wild Solanum sp. with solanaceous crops viz, tomato, brinjal and chilli. 3 wild species of Solanum were used as rootstocks and three notable varieties of tomato (ArkaSamrat), brinjal (Local-purple striped) and chilli (LCA-625) were used as scion. The statistical design followed is Simple CRD with five replications. Statistical analysis revealed a significant difference for all the parameters studied. Maximum days to seed germination (26.66) and maximum days taken to reach the grafting stage (67.66) were reported in Solanum torvum, while tomato var. ArkaSamratand brinjal var took fewer days to germinate (4.66). Local-purple striped took a minimum of days (29.66) to reach the graftable stage. Maximum seedling girth (3.64 mm) was reported in Solanum gilo, while minimum seedling girth (2.45 mm) was observed in tomato. Maximum no. successful grafts (19.66) and graft success (98.33%) were reported in tomato and brinjal grafted on Solanum torvum, while minimum no. successful grafts (8.66) and graft success (43.33%) were reported in chilli on Solanum torvum. On the other hand, brinjal on Solanum torvum recorded minimum days for graft union (9.33), while chilli on Solanum torvum took maximum days for graft union (13.66). Maximum shoot length from graft union (18.57 cm) was reported in tomato on Solanum torvum, while minimum shoot length was reported in chilli on Solanum torvum (12.52 cm). Maximum field survival rate (93.33%) was reported in tomato and brinjal grafted on Solanum torvum while minimum field survival (35%) was reported in chilli on Solanum torvum.
