Comparative effect of Trichoderma viride, essential oils, and chemicals against early blight (Alternaria solani) of tomato

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted at the research plot of the Department of Plant Pathology, Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences, Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh during the Rabi season of 2020-21. This study aimed to evaluate different chemicals, essential oils, bio-agents, and their combinations for managing early blight of tomato caused by Alternaria solani and to enhance growth parameters. Eight treatments were tested: Carbendazim 12% + Mancozeb 63% WP, Mancozeb 75 WP, Carbendazim 50 WP, Trichoderma viride, Neem oil + T. viride, Castor oil + T. viride, Clove oil + T. viride, and a control. All treatments significantly outperformed the control in managing early blight and improving growth parameters, with Mancozeb 75 WP being the most effective, yielding the lowest disease intensity, and highest fruit yield. Trichoderma viride and essential oils offer a sustainable approach to disease management, aligning with the growing emphasis on eco-friendly agricultural practices. Further research is recommended to explore the integration of these treatments into comprehensive disease management programs.
