Impact of lugolrsquo;s iodine on reproductive performance in anestrous buffaloes and cattle in semi-arid regions of Rajasthan

Abstract

This study examines the efficacy of Lugol’s iodine in inducing estrus in anestrous buffaloes and cattle in the semi-arid regions of Rajasthan. Anestrus, a common reproductive issue in livestock, can significantly impact milk production and economic stability. The trial involved 312 buffaloes and 159 cattle treated with Lugol’s iodine over a 16-month period at various cattle development centers. The study found heat induction rates of 28.30% in buffaloes and 25.79% in cattle, which are comparable to other non-hormonal treatments. The results suggest that Lugol’s iodine, by addressing iodine deficiencies and improving thyroid function, offers a viable alternative for managing anestrus in livestock, particularly in resource-limited settings. The findings are significant for improving reproductive performance and contributing to the economic stability of dairy farmers in arid climates.
