Effect of packaging materials on seed quality parameters during storage in soybean (Glycine max L.) seed harvested at physiological maturity stage in offseason

Abstract

The maintenance of seed quality after harvest and during storage is a major problem in soybean seed because the seed is poor storer as it is more vulnerable to mechanical damage from harvesting to next sowing season. During storage the soybean seeds were evaluated at bimonthly intervals using 2 factorial designs, viz., varieties: JS335 and Basara, and storage containers: Jute bag, high-density polythene bag (HDPE) and grain pro bags. The seed quality parameters such as per cent germination, seedling length, seedling dry weight, seedling vigour index-I, seedling vigour index-II were recorded high in soybean seed stored in grain pro bags followed by HDPE and jute bags in both JS 335 and Basara varieties while moisture content and seed electrical conductivity leachates were low in seeds stored in grain pro bags.
