Nutri-gardens for sustainable food security: Enhancing nutrition at the grassroots level

Abstract

Nutri-gardens, kitchens, or home gardens, offer a sustainable and cost-effective strategy to enhance food security and improve nutrition, especially in rural and resource-limited settings. These small-scale gardens are increasingly recognized as a vital component of community-based food systems, providing direct access to fresh, nutrient-dense fruits, vegetables, and medicinal plants. Nutri gardens empower households and communities to achieve a balanced diet while addressing malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies by fostering self-reliance and reducing dependence on external food sources. Additionally, Nutri-gardens promote biodiversity, contributing to the agroecological balance essential for resilient food systems. These gardens encourage cultivating diverse plant species that improve soil health, enhance pest control, and support ecosystem sustainability without harmful chemicals. Nutri-gardens also critically strengthen rural livelihoods, particularly for smallholder farmers, by providing low-input agricultural solutions that maximize yield and reduce household expenses. The surplus these gardens produce can generate additional income, further supporting economic stability. Moreover, as climate change poses growing challenges to agricultural productivity, Nutri-gardens offer an adaptive strategy with the potential for incorporating climate-resilient crops and water-efficient technologies. This ensures ayear-round food supply even in the face of adverse environmental conditions. Beyond nutrition and food security, Nutri-gardens also enhance local food sovereignty by promoting autonomy over food production and consumption, aligning with culturally relevant and dietary needs. In doing so, they contribute to the larger goal of achieving sustainable development by addressing hunger, poverty, and health challenges in an integrated manner. Given their adaptability and effectiveness, Nutri-gardens hold immense potential for scaling up to national food security programs, making them an essential strategy for achieving sustainable food systems and promoting health at the grassroots level. Through strategic implementation, they can contribute significantly to long-term food security and improve the well-being of vulnerable populations.
