Innovative approaches to feline mandibular lip avulsion: Integrating autologous platelet rich plasma with surgical management

Abstract

A 2- years-old DSH queen cat was presented to DVSR, RIVER with avulsion of lower lip following automobile accident. On clinical examination, extensive avulsion of the lower lip exposing the ventral aspect of the mandible bone was noticed. On radiographic examination no bone involvement was noticed. Under general anesthesia using Inj. xylazine @1mg/kg b. wt. and Inj. TELAZOL @ 5mg/kg b. wt. intramuscularly, irregular skin edges were debrided and subcutaneous sutures using Polyglactin 910 size 2-0 were placed to adhere the degloved lip and chin to the mylohyoid muscle. Autologous Platelet rich plasma was injected at the wound site. Then, the labial mucosa and gingiva were opposed by simple interrupted sutures using polyglactin 910 size 2-0. The jaw was immobilized using customized mask. Post-operatively, animal was maintained on fluid therapy, antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs for 5 days. Healing was noticed within 7 days and animal made an uneventful recovery.
