Assessing rice germplasm to identify resistance against brown plant hopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens Stal

Abstract

Brown plant hopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens (Stal.), one of the major insect pests in rice, has developed resistance against the majority of insecticides which has created a new challenge for its management. Growing of BPH resistant varieties is an economical, environmentally safe and effective strategy to manage this pest. In the present study, 313 germplasm of rice germplasms were screened in the glasshouse conditions along with susceptible checks Taichung Native-1 (TN1). The standard seed box screening method was used for the bulk screening of entries. Three hundred thirteen entries were screened under the evaluation of National Screening Nurseries germplasm against BPH under glasshouse condition to find out new source of resistance against BPH. The result revealed that PTB 33 were found to be high level of resistant (R) with damage score of 1.0 followed by entries HRI-205 which was recognised as resistant. Furthermore, the germplasm like CR 3849-2-1-2-1-2, OR 2523-6, RP 6467-IR 143507- 26-37-2-4-20-10-B, PHI-20103 (Hybrid), RP 6327-B-171-3-2, NDR 359 (NC), BPT 3050, KJT 2010-3, US-317 (Hybrid), AD 13280, Chittimutyalu, KNM 7715, RP 5594-147-23-1, KR 16024, RP 2068-18-3-5 were designated as moderately resistant.
