Unveiling imperialistic attitudes in pilgrim’s notes of wanderings in the Himmala

Abstract

Travel literature is an important dimension that reveals a lot about a society. It encompasses the customs, values, beliefs and traditions of the contemporary era. Social, political, cultural, and geographical aspects are covered in this dimension. Pilgrim’s travel account Notes of Wanderings in the Himmala (1844) converges an intricate text. When considered a literary piece, this work is associated with the Victorian period, which witnessed imperialism, Romanticism, and Orientalism. At the same time, these notes are also a personal and philosophical work. The research paper intends to study how the aforementioned brings out the author’s emotions and perception of the world through his travels in British Kumaun, one of the last unspoilt, unravished and stunning parts of the world.
