The effect of agricultural runoff on freshwater ecosystems

Abstract

Agricultural runoff, the flow of water from agricultural lands into nearby water bodies, carries with it a variety of pollutants such as fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and sediment. This runoff has significant consequences for freshwater ecosystems, affecting water quality, biodiversity, and ecosystem stability. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the sources of agricultural runoff, its ecological impacts on freshwater ecosystems, and current mitigation strategies. Through an analysis of case studies and research findings, the paper seeks to highlight the urgent need for improved agricultural practices and policy interventions to mitigate the negative effects of runoff on freshwater bodies.
