Cost and returns of guava (Psidium guajava L.) in Hisar district of Haryana
Abstract
This study was conducted to analyze the cost of cultivation and returns per hectare for guava fruit production. A purposive sample of thirty guava farmers was selected from various villages in the Adampur block of the Hisar district in Haryana. Based on the nature of the data, various statistical and economic tools were employed to estimate the costs and returns associated with guava production. The average establishment cost for the first year per hectare was calculated to be ?288520. The annual returns per hectare from guava orchards were estimated to be ?278025. The study also assessed the economic viability of guava cultivation, calculating key metrics such as net present value (?861549.23), internal rate of return (35.37%), benefit-cost ratio (1:4.49), and payback period (5 years). The findings indicate that guava cultivation is a promising step towards the diversification and commercialization of agriculture in the state, contributing to the goal of doubling farmers’ incomes. To further enhance the profitability of guava cultivation, there is a need to develop early fruit-bearing varieties and ensure the timely supply of necessary inputs. Highlights: Guava cultivation plays a significant role in diversifying and commercializing agriculture in the state. It not only introduces variety into agricultural practices but also contributes to the economic well-being of farmers by potentially doubling their income.
