Therapeutic management of hypoparathyroidism in a Siberian husky pup: A case report

Abstract

A 6-month-old female Siberian husky pup presenting with seizures, tremors, unable, to bear weight on limbs, inappetence and weakness. Later on, recumbent and no vocalization were seen. Laboratory findings revealed severe hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, and undetectable parathyroid hormone levels, confirming hypoparathyroidism. Treatment started with 10 mL of 10% calcium gluconate in 250 mL of 0.9% saline intravenously for 3 days followed by Calcitrol (20 ng/kg/day) during 10 days and calcium carbonate oral (1 g/day and after 30 days 0.5 g/day) for maintenance. Anti-convulsant (Phenobarbitone @ 2.5 mg per kg. body weight) and injection parathyroid hormone @20 microgram total dose subcutaneously given for a week, resulted in resolution of clinical signs. This case highlights the importance of considering hypoparathyroidism in Siberian husky pup presenting with neurological signs and emphasizes the need for prompt diagnosis and treatment to prevent life-threatening complications.
