Determinants and Choices of place of delivery among women of childbearing age in Shira local government area, Bauchi state-Nigeria

Abstract

Background: Majority of the maternal death that occurs especially in developing countries are preventable or avoidable. Health services, cultural and socio-economic status of women are among the determining factors influencing the place of delivery. This study assessed the determinants and choices of place of delivery among women of child bearing age in Shira Local Government of Bauchi State-Nigeria.Methods: The study was a descriptive cross-sectional conducted using a semi-structured interviewer-administered questionnaire to 290 women of child bearing age between 15 to 45 years in Shira Local Government Area of Bauchi State, Nigeria. The data was analyzed using SPSS version 22.0 and 0.05 was considered as level of significance. Result: The mean age of study participants was 26.9 years with standard deviation of 4.69 and 61.0% of the participants delivered their last child at home while 39.0% delivered in the hospital.
