Phytochemical profiling and pharmacological investigation of methanol extract of Spondias Mombin seeds
Abstract
This research aims to improve the therapeutic applications of Spondias mombin by evaluating its phytochemical and pharmaceutical properties. The extract was obtained from the plant's seed. Methanol extraction technique. Phytochemical analysis identified alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids, saponin, and reducing sugar. The analgesic effect of methanol was tested using the acetic acid producing writhing technique. At 250mg/kg and 500mg/kg, it reduced writhing by 45% and 57.5%, respectively, compared to the control. The reference standard, diclofenac Na at 10mg/kg, reduced writhing by 77.5%. The antidiarrheal test was performed by inducing castor oil to cause diarrhea, and the extract demonstrated (32.7%) and (37.9%) inhibition of feces and (55%) and (47.5%) inhibition of diarrhea at 250mg/kg and 500mg/kg, respectively. At 3 mg/kg, conventional loperamide inhibited feces by 44% and diarrhea by 59.97%. Thrombolytic activity was measured using the clot disruption technique, with methanol clot lysis (86%), and conventional streptokinase (76%) as a positive control. This study findings revealed some bioactivity, which might be due to the presence of the aforementioned bioactive chemical is confirmed, however more research is required.
