The impact of microplastics on marine life and ecosystems

Abstract

Microplastics, tiny plastic particles measuring less than 5 millimeters, have emerged as a major environmental concern, particularly in marine ecosystems. These particles, which originate from the breakdown of larger plastic debris or from direct sources such as personal care products, are now ubiquitous in the worlds oceans. This paper examines the impact of microplastics on marine life and ecosystems, exploring how these pollutants affect organisms at various trophic levels, disrupt food chains, and degrade marine habitats. The study also addresses the broader ecological consequences of microplastic pollution, including bioaccumulation and its potential effects on human health. Finally, the article discusses ongoing research and mitigation strategies aimed at reducing the presence of microplastics in marine environments.
