Phytomediated synthesis and In vitro bio-efficacy studies of silver nanoparticles using leaf extract of Cynodon dactylon, sourced from southern Kerala

Journal of Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry · 2024 · Vol. 13(5) · pp. 467–474

Abstract

The utilization of natural resources for sustainable technological advancements has garnered significant attention in recent years. Cynodon dactylon, a perennial ‘weed’ grass, is recognized for its ethnopharmacological properties. The study underscores the multifaceted utility of C. dactylon, as a reducing agent in synthesizing silver nanoparticles (Cd-AgNPs), its characterization and In vitro bioefficacy properties. The visual colour changes after adding aqueous leaf extract to AgNO3 observed the formation of Cd-AgNPs. UV-Vis spectrum revealed an absorption peak at 410nm and FTIR exhibited the functional groups involved in stabilizing the nanoparticles. Antibacterial activity marked the highest zone of inhibition (14 mm) for Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Free radicle scavenging ability was reported to be 77.89 mg GAE/g sample in TCA and an IC50 of 63.43 mg/ml in DPPH. Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue dye under sunlight marked 78.74% degradation by 120 minutes. The promising results of the study and the economic viability of the plant can be leveraged for AgNP fabrication that can be exploited in various industrial sectors with further research.
