Resource use efficiency in the production of Chengalikodan Nendran banana (GI Tag variety) in Thrissur district of Kerala

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the resource use efficiency in the production of Chengalikodan Nendran banana (GI Tag variety) in Kerala's Thrissur district. The sample farmers were classified in to three groups based on the area under Chengaliukodan Nendran banana cultivation.The study's findings demonstrate that the overall coefficient of determination was 0.99, meaning that the identified input factors examined in the function accounts for 99 percent of the variation in banana production. Among the input variables evaluated, farm yard manure (FYM) and urea are overutilized, whereas planting material, human labour, and plant protection chemicals (PPC) are underutilized. This allows for resource reallocation, resulting in increased output and lower production costs. High wage rate (100.00%) is the major production constraint followed by high cost of supporting material (84.45%) and wildlife damage to plantations (71.12%). Other production constraints include frequent requirement of financial assistance (54.44%) and scarcity of obtaining quality planting material (46.67%).
