Cost and returns of watermelon cultivation in Raigad district of Maharashtra: An economic analysis

Abstract

The study entitled “Cost and returns of watermelon cultivation in Raigad district of Maharashtra: An Economic Analysis” focused on estimating costs, returns and profitability. A sample of 120 watermelon growers was selected randomly from Raigad district. The respondents were classified into three groups viz., marginal, small and medium farmers. Per hectare cost of cultivation was highest for medium farmers (Rs. 187835), followed by small (Rs. 176962) and marginal farmers (Rs. 168404). Net profits at Cost ‘C’ were Rs. 103516 for marginal farmers, Rs. 117771 for small farmers and Rs. 132008 for medium farmers. At the overall level, net profits at cost ‘C’ was of Rs. 119205. The B:C ratio was 1.70 for medium, 1.67 for small and 1.61 for marginal farmers, indicating profitability.
