Growth and instability analysis of pineapple in Shivamogga

Abstract

Pineapple (Ananas comos) most economically important tropical fruit in the world. The origin of pineapple is Brazil. It has spread throughout tropical and subtropical regions as a commercial fruit crop. The present study carried out in Shivamogga district, which ranks first in area and production in Karnataka. Which comprises around 72.72% of the area and 75.41% of the production in the state. Pineapple has been identified as the "One District One Product" of Shivamogga district to receive special attention and support. In Karnataka, growth rate (2002-03 to 2021-22) of productivity of pineapple was positively significant. It also revealed lower variability in both the area (10.55%) and productivity (8.78%) of pineapple, suggesting relatively stable during the specified period. However, the production of pineapples (16.06%) have a moderate level of variability. Whereas production and productivity of pineapple in Shivamogga district were significant with growth rate of 2.99 and 1.74%, respectively. Regarding variability, the analysis revealed that both the area (17.40%) and production (20.54%) of pineapple cultivation in Shivamogga district exhibited moderate levels of variability. On the other hand, the productivity (10.46%) of pineapple demonstrated a lower level of variability, which shows more stable trends over the specified period. There is wide range variation in production and productivity within Karnataka there more focus on brining awareness about pineapple cultivation about the benefits of boosting production. High density cropping is recommended for pineapple cultivation and conduct some agri-expo related to pineapple and also about waste management of pineapple sucker after post-harvest.
