Assessment of technology adoption and constraints in coconut cultivation in South Konkan region of Maharashtra

Abstract

The Konkan region of Maharashtra has wide cultivation of coconut due to its suitable climatic conditions. The Regional Coconut Research Station, Bhatye, Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth has done thorough research in Coconut field and have recommended number of technologies for improving quality of coconut production. The present study provides a comprehensive analysis on assessment of technology adoption and document the constraints faced by coconut growers during cultivation of coconut in South Konkan region of Maharashtra. In the study area, the average cultivated land at overall level of farmers was 1.15 ha and about 37.01 percent of gross cropped area was under coconut cultivation. At overall level, cropping intensity was found to be 110.43 percent. The findings of the study revealed that the average extent of adoption of technologies in coconut for low, medium and high adopter group of farmers was 29.27, 41.66 and 71.03 percent, respectively. At overall level the technology adoption in coconut cultivation was 45.51 percent. While cultivating coconut, farmers had faced various problems. Out of which major constraints faced by farmers includes high labour costs, Lack of guidance and high fertilizer costs.
