Evalvating the diversity and conservation status of fishes in Ujani Dam Solapur District, Maharashtra, India

Abstract

The natural diversity of aquatic ecosystems is influenced by a range of ecological factors and human interventions. Biodiversity research is essential for documentation and developing conservation strategies. In freshwater ecosystems, fish are particularly important due to their ecological role and economic significance. Ensuring the preservation of freshwater fish species is crucial for both food security and ecological equilibrium. However, effective conservation measures can only be implemented when there is a comprehensive understanding of freshwater fish diversity. Our research focused on examining the biodiversity of fish fauna in the Ujani dam, specifically at three locations: Kumbhargao, Khatgao, and Palasdeve. The study revealed 17 species of fish, categorized into six orders and 10 families. Among these, the Cypriniforme family was found to be the most prevalent across all observed fish families.
