Effect of different nitrogen management strategies and intercropping systems on yield and economic sustainability
Abstract
This research explores the impact of different nitrogen management strategies and intercropping systems on crop yield and economic sustainability. Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) stands as a comprehensive approach integrating organic manures, chemical fertilizers, and biofertilizers, aimed at optimizing agricultural practices. Various studies substantiate the efficacy of INM techniques in improving fertilizer use efficiency and elevating crop nutrient uptake, thus enhancing soil fertility and health. INM not only enhances crop yield but also contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing nutrient losses and pollution risks associated with excessive chemical fertilizer use. However, challenges such as complex decision-making processes, limited input availability, cost considerations, and the need for technical knowledge hinder INM implementation. Despite these challenges, research indicates the economic viability of INM practices, with enhanced profitability and lower input costs attributed to higher crop yields and optimized nutrient utilization. Effective nutrient management for specific crops involves considering factors such as nutrient uptake methods, nutrient roles, forms, mobility, and fertilizer composition, along with recognizing visual symptoms of nutrient deficiency. This comprehensive understanding facilitates cost-effective and efficient nutrient application, even without sophisticated soil and plant tissue analysis.
