Qualitative and quantitative phytochemical analysis of Terminalia arjuna

International Journal of Advanced Biochemistry Research · 2024 · Vol. 8(9) · pp. 936–939

Abstract

Terminalia arjuna known for its medicinal values since ancient time and it has been extensively used in human and animal practice. Phytochemicals in the plant like phenol, flavanoids, steroids and etc are responsible for pharmacological actions. In this study, we selected T. arjuna bark crude extract and subjected into Soxhlet apparatus to get aqueous, ethanolic and hydroethanolic (1:1) extracts and the yield were recorded. The weight of the extract obtained from aqueous, ethanolic and hydroethanolic preparations of T. arjuna bark was 5.4g, 4.84g and 8.1g respectively. Preliminary phytochemical analysis revealed strong presence of alkaloids, phenol and carbohydrate in aqueous extract of T. arjuna whereas phenols, flavanoids, saponins was strongly positive for hydroethanolic extract. Significant amount of phenol and flavanoids was recorded in ethanolic and hydroethanolic extract.
