Occurrence of subclinical mastitis in goats at Jabalpur (M.P.)

Abstract

Mastitis is an inflammation of parenchyma of the mammary gland and is of two major types: clinical mastitis and subclinical mastitis. The subclinical form has more importance because of its 15 to 40 times higher prevalence than the clinical form, lack of inflammatory symptoms, challenge to diagnose, adverse effects to milk quality and production. The study was conducted in the Department of Veterinary Medicine, College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, Nanaji Deshmukh Veterinary Science University (N.D.V.S.U), Jabalpur (M.P.). A total of 256 lactating goats irrespective of age, breed and stage of lactation belonging to both organized and unorganized sectors at Jabalpur were screened. On the basis of MCMT, out of 256 lactating goats, 98 goats were found positive for subclinical mastitis. The overall occurrence of caprine subclinical mastitis was recorded as 38.28% on animal basis and 33.33% on udder halves basis. Significantly higher occurrence of subclinical mastitis (51.16%) was seen in the goats of age group above 4 years. Breed wise occurrence was significantly higher in Sirohi breed of goats in subclinical mastitis (52.94%). Sector wise, parity wise and lactation stage wise occurrence showed non-significant variations.
