Effect of packaging materials and seed treatments on seed quality parameters of rice during seed storage

Abstract

The lab experiment was conducted on packaging materials and seed treatment with different botanicals on storability of rice seeds for a period of 12 months starting from February 2022 to February-2023 at Agricultural Research Station, Gangavathi, University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur. The experiment consisted of fifteen treatment combinations involving five packaging materials and three seed treatments with three replications. The results concluded that, among the packaging materials, at the end of 12 months of storage significantly higher germination percent, root length, shoot length, seedling length and seedling vigour index-I was observed in trial bag (Seed unit, UAS, Raichur), however, it was on par in trial bag with nano neem spray. Trial bag can be used for better storage of rice seeds upto 12 months. With respect to seed treatments, significantly higher seed germination percent, root length, shoot length, seedling length and seedling vigour index-I was found at 12 month of storage was noticed in seed treated with sweet flag rhizome powder @ 20 g kg-1 of seeds as compared to neem leaf powder @ 10 g kg-1 of seeds. The rice seeds can be treated with sweet flag rhizome powder @ 20 g kg-1 of seeds for maintaining seed viability during storage.
