Behind the addiction: A qualitative investigation of substance abuse in a rehabilitation facility

Abstract

This study aims to explore the factors contributing to substance abuse among individuals undergoing treatment at the Jeevandaan Rehabilitation Centre in Karula, Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh. Through qualitative interviews with 40 participants, key contributing factors were identified and analyzed. The study reveals that these factors significantly impact the initiation and continuation of substance abuse, with many addicts citing peer influence and environmental factors as primary contributors. Additionally, the research highlights the role of easily accessible drugs, facilitated by local chemists, and the transition from smoking to more severe forms of drug use as critical issues. Lack of parental involvement and supervision, particularly in wealthier families, as well as the stress associated with low-income occupations, were also significant factors. These findings underscore the urgent need for targeted interventions and more rehabilitation centers in West Uttar Pradesh to address these multifaceted challenges effectively.
