Assessing the productive efficiency and adaptation level of Namakkal gold quail in Virudhunagar District of Tamil Nadu

Abstract

The study has been carried out in ICAR Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Aruppukottai, Virudhunagar District of Tamil Nadu to assess the production performance of Namakal Gold Quail in field conditions. Under the Front Line Demonstration (FLD) programme, 250 numbers of day old chicks of Namakkal Gold Quail procured from Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal were distributed to the beneficiaries of Virudhunagar district. Data on body weight and feed consumption were recorded at weekly interval and mortality was recorded at the occurrence. The mean (±S.E) body weight of 226.21±0.16 g was recorded at the end of 5th week. The maximum body weight gain of 48.89±0.12 g/day was recorded during the third week and thereafter gradual reduction in the rate of weight gain was noticed. In the study, the overall livability percentage recorded for Namakkal Gold Quail was 98%. From the study it is concluded that, the adaptation and performance of Namakkal Gold Quail in hot semi-arid region was promising and the rearing can be taken up as an alternate allied agricultural activity to ensure the subsidiary income of the family in shorter duration.
