Influence of propagation conditions on rooting of stem cuttings in Jumun (Syzigium cumini L. Skeels)
Abstract
Vegetative propagation of Jamun (Syzygium cumini L. Skeels) through cutting is the most convenient and the cheapest method to obtain true to type plants in considerably lesser time. In the present study, effect of different propagation conditions on the rooting ability of different types of stem cuttings of jamun was assessed at College of Horticulture, University of Horticultural sciences, Navanagar, Bagalkot (Karnataka) India. The experiment was laid out in Factorial Completely Randomized Design. There was significant difference in various shoot and root parameters were observed. In the interaction the minimum days (9.47) taken for sprout initiation was recorded in T6 (Shade net + shoot tip cutting). The highest sprout percentage (26.43), number of sprouts (6), number of leaves (8.91), dry weight (15.41g), number of primary and secondary roots (57.42), length of longest root (17.10 cm) and rooting percentage (35.33) was recorded in T4 (Shade net + hard wood cutting). The highest fresh weight 22.47g was recorded in T3 (Mist house + shoot tip cutting), whereas, the highest shoot length of 8.63cm was recorded in T6 (Shade net + shoot tip cutting). Overall interaction of hardwood cutting and shade net exhibited superior results.
