A review of the role of molecular markers in improvement of fruit crops

Abstract

Genetic markers have revolutionized plant breeding and genetics. Molecular markers are a powerful tool for genetic improvement programs in fruit crops. This review highlights their significance, types, and applications. Molecular markers identify and select desirable traits like disease resistance and improved fruit quality, facilitating marker-assisted selection and accelerating breeding. Various molecular markers (RFLP, RAPD, SSR, SNP) are used in fruit crops like apples, bananas, and mangoes. Molecular markers have transformed fruit crop improvement, offering a powerful tool for breeders and geneticists. As technology evolves, they will play a crucial role in shaping the future of fruit crop production. This review demonstrates the importance of molecular markers in genetic improvement programs and their potential for future applications. Molecular markers are essential for developing high-quality fruit crops with desirable traits.
