Estimation of heterosis on yield and contributing traits of okra [Abelmoschus esculentus L. Monech] using line x tester matting design

Abstract

At the Field Experimental Center, Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Science, Prayagraj (UP), India, okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench) cultivars were meticulously evaluated during the kharif season of 2022–2023. Using a line x testers approach with six lines and four testers, hybrids were created and subsequently assessed in the kharif season of 2023. Employing sound agronomic practices ensured the health and vigor of the crops throughout the study. Notably, five specific cross combinations-P1 x P7, P1 x P9, P3 x P8, P3 x P10, and P4 x P7-demonstrated significant heterosis, surpassing both the better parent and midparent heterosis levels. These hybrids exhibited superior performance in terms of yield and other desirable traits, highlighting their potential for economic cultivation. The study underscores the variability in okra yield characteristics and the promising production capabilities of these selected crosses.
