Study about genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance for yield and yield attributing traits of maize (Zea mays L.)

International Journal of Research in Agronomy · 2024 · Vol. 7(9) · pp. 251–255

Abstract

N present investigation 45 single cross hybrids along with their parental lines were evaluated during Rabi 2022. Analysis of variance showed significant differences for all studied traits indicating sufficient amount of variability was present. The phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) was found higher than genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV)for all traits. The highest value of GCV (30.345) and PCV (30.42) revealed by grain yield/plant. Lowest GCV (1.99) showed by days to 75% dry husk and lowest PCV (2.68) by days to 50% silking. High heritability (narrow sense) and high genetic advance percent over mean were found for cob weight, number of grains/cob and grain yield per plant in both generations. These traits can be used for improvement of maize.
