Changes in gut microbiota in patients with mixed infection of hymenolepis nana and giardia and its therapeutic correction

Abstract

Combined parasitic infections are becoming increasingly frequent. Gastrointestinal tract damage in such patients is accompanied by significant dysbiotic changes. The aim of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of using Saccharomyces boulardii in the complex therapy of patients with mixed infection by Hymenolepis nana and Giardia. A total of 36 patients with combined infection by Hymenolepis nana and Giardia were examined and divided into two groups. The 1st group included patients who received only basic treatment, while the 2nd group included patients who besides basic treatment received a Saccharomyces boulardii. The dysbiosis index was used to determine the level of intestinal dysbiosis. During the investigation of intestinal microbiota, it was found that all patients had certain changes before treatment. There was a decrease in the number of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria, and an increase in the number of Bacteroides and Peptostreptococcus. The total number of E. coli was decreased, while the level of E. coli with weak enzymatic properties was increased, and hemolytic E. coli was found. There was an increase of level of enterococci, opportunistic bacteria, and the presence of Candida. In patients who received treatment with the Saccharomyces boulardii, a significant change in the state of intestinal microflora was observed compared to results before treatment and in comparison, with patients who did not receive the probiotic.
