Exploring farmer's profile characteristics and their views on custom hiring service centres

Abstract

The study was conducted in Southern Karnataka concentrated on assessing the perception of farmers towards the usefulness of custom hiring service centres in Tumakuru district. Ex-post-facto research design was employed and a simple random sampling method without replacement was used to select 130 farmers who are registered in 13 custom hiring service centres. The current study focusses on the relationship between profile characteristics of farmers with their perception. Data was collected through personal interview method and the analytical tools used for the current study are correlation and ordered logistic regression. Results reveled that profile characteristics such as education, extension participation, training received and age, farm size, farming experience, Cosmopoliteness, achievement motivation, risk orientation shows significant relation at 1 percent and non-significant respectively with their perception towards the usefulness of custom hiring service centres. From an ordered logistic regression analysis education, extension participation, and training received are positive and significantly (p = 0.01) influenced the outcome whereas mass media exposure and achievement motivation are statistically significant at 5 percent. Proportional odds ratios for the ordered logit model shows that for one unit increase in education, mass media exposure, trainings, extension participation and achievement motivation, the perception of farmers towards the usefulness of custom hiring service centres increases by 1.03, 0.14, 1.05, 1.02 and 0.11 times greater respectively. this study suggest that policymakers and stakeholders must prioritize investments in CHSCs and collaborate with farmers to harness their benefits effectively, thereby contributing to the advancement of agriculture and rural development.
