Assessment of soil fertility status of Salaimendha village of Nagpur, Maharashtra

Abstract

This study on soil fertility status and to assess the nutrient indices of soils of Salaimendha village of Nagpur district of Maharashtra was conducted during 2023-2024. Total 58 surface soil samples were collected. The soils were neutral to slightly alkaline in reaction with no salinity hazards. Low to high in organic carbon (0.31 to 0.73%), moderately calcareous to calcareous (1.2 to 9.9%), very low to medium available nitrogen (138 to 396 kg ha-1), very low to medium available phosphorus (10.4 to 27.7 kg ha-1), high to very high potassium (302 to 548 kg ha-1), low to high in sulphur (8.9 to 22.8 mg kg-1). The soil is low to medium in available iron (1.7 to 7.1 mg kg-1), medium to high in available copper (0.34 to 1.83 mg kg-1), low to medium in available manganese (0.6 to 4.22 mg kg-1) and low to medium in available zinc (0.28 to 1.58 mg kg-1). Considering the nutrient index values (according to six tier system given by Ramamoorthy and Bajaj, 1969) of soil organic carbon, available nitrogen, available phosphorus and available potassium of Salaimendha village are moderate, low, very low and very high in respectively and nutrient index values (according to three tier system of Parker) of available sulphur, available iron, available manganese, available zinc and available copper are medium in category.
