An emanating fungal disease black band of mango: Present status and future research priorities

Abstract

A roving survey conducted from July to December 2019 assessed black band disease in mango orchards across seven districts of Karnataka, India. The survey covered various soil types and mango genotypes, revealing a disease incidence ranging from 0 to 91.37% and a Percent Disease Index (PDI) from 0 to 41.66%. Ramanagara district had the highest disease incidence (91.37%) and PDI (29.18%), while Gadag had the lowest. Older mango trees (≥21 years) were more affected, with a 97.20% incidence, whereas younger trees (≤5 years) were mostly disease-free. Among genotypes, Alphonso showed the highest susceptibility, with a disease incidence of 87.23% and a PDI of 23.30, while Mallika was the least affected. This study highlights the need for targeted disease management, especially in high-risk areas and susceptible genotypes.
