Efficacy of Prednisolone in a thrombocytopenic rottweiler positive for Ehrlichia canis: A case report

International Journal of Advanced Biochemistry Research · 2024 · Vol. 8(9S) · pp. 74–76

Abstract

A Rottweiler was presented with a clinical history characterized by anorexia, lethargy, depression, fever, and mild bilateral limb edema. Physical examination revealed pronounced swelling of all superficial lymph nodes, pale mucus membrane. Hematological findings indicated severe anaemia, neutrophilia, thrombocytopenia, and monocytosis, with morulae observed within monocytes. The ultrasound of the abdomen demonstrated splenomegaly along with an enlargement of the vascular structures in the spleen. The dog was treated with doxycycline at a dosage of 10 mg/kg body weight, once daily for one month, alongside prednisolone acetate at 0.5 mg/kg body weight for the initial days of treatment. After a month of therapy, the dog showed significant clinical improvement and a complete recovery, reflecting a positive therapeutic outcome.
