Abstract

Agro ecological approaches to pest management emphasize the importance of integrating ecological principles into agricultural practices to create resilient and sustainable farming systems. This review explores the role of crop diversification and habitat manipulation in managing insect pests effectively while reducing reliance on chemical pesticides. Crop diversification, including practices such as intercropping, crop rotation, and polycultures, enhances biodiversity, disrupts pest life cycles, and promotes natural enemy populations. Habitat manipulation, through techniques like planting cover crops, maintaining hedgerows, and establishing flower strips, creates favorable environments for beneficial organisms and improves ecosystem services. Together, these strategies contribute to reducing pest outbreaks, enhancing pest resistance, and fostering long-term agricultural sustainability. The review highlights successful case studies, practical implementation guidelines, and the challenges associated with adopting agro-ecological pest management practices. The integration of crop diversification and habitat manipulation not only mitigates pest-related risks but also supports broader environmental and socio-economic goals, making it a vital component of future-proof agricultural systems.
