A review on strategies for managing sucking insect pests in Indian grain legumes with chemical insecticides

Abstract

This review explores the impact of chemical insecticides on the control of major sucking pests in grain legumes across India. Sucking pests such as aphids, jassids, whiteflies, bugs and thrips are significant threats to legume crops, causing direct damage and spreading diseases, which result in substantial yield losses. Chemical insecticides have been the primary method for managing these pests, with both traditional and newer formulations in use. However, the effectiveness of these insecticides can vary depending on factors such as pest species, crop variety, and regional conditions. This review critically assesses the current research on the bioefficacy of these chemical insecticides, highlighting both their successes and limitations. The insights gained aim to guide future strategies for more effective pest management in India's grain legume production.
