Biochemical influences on fruit fly infestation using preferential studies in selected guava varieties
Abstract
This study investigates the preference of fruit fly (B. dorsalis) oviposition and maggot development across various guava varieties through and no-choice tests. In the choice test, Seedless and Taiwan Pink varieties were highly favored and preferred by fruit flies for both oviposition and maggot development, followed by Nectar and Taiwan White with moderate preferences, while Allahabad Safeda exhibited the least attractiveness for egg laying. Conversely, the no-choice test showed no significant difference in preference across all varieties, suggesting consistent oviposition behavior possibly influenced by dense fruit fly populations within individual cages. Additionally, varieties with high phenols, flavonoids, tannins and ascorbic acid were found to be least susceptible and varieties with high sugars and protein favoured high fruit fly infestation. These findings highlight the importance of guava variety characteristics in fruit fly preference and provide insights for effective pest management strategies.
